Appia Regina Viarum is now in the UNESCO Tentative list

As already announced during the Conference of studies “Via Appia da Roma in Brindisi”, organized on October 2021 in the occasion of the centenary of the birth of Antonio Cederna, The Ministry of Cultural Heritage has announced that it has officially submitted the candidacy for the World Heritage Site of the entire route of the Appian Way, from Rome to Brindisi.

The nomination sees the collaboration between all the Entities involved from the territorial and administrative point of view and therefore the full involvement of the Municipality of Rome, where the Appian Way begins and in whose territory there are important monuments.

The Capitoline Superintendence, which in close collaboration with the Regional Park and the Archaeological Park of Appia deals with the management and enhancement of the areas owned and municipal competence, was particularly pleased to participate in the initiative, involving various sites of his competence (such as the Sepulchre of Scipioni, The Walls of Aureliano and the Villa of Maxentius).
For some time the Superintendence had encouraged online communication with specific lessons for schools entitled “In cammino sulla via Appia” and publishing on social networks, among others, a movie in Italian and English “Just Appia” to invite people to make a visit and a journey through the words of the same founder of the way Appio Claudio Cieco.
In support of the UNESCO nomination, specific inspections have been carried out and texts describing the monumental areas have been prepared, to be included in the dossier to be submitted to the Commission which will evaluate the candidacy.
